A Comparative Study of Lifestyle and Cognitive-Emotional Regulation in Mothers of Children with Learning Disabilities and Mothers of Typically Developing Children
This study sought to conduct a comparative analysis of lifestyle patterns and cognitive-emotional regulation strategies among mothers of children with learning disabilities and mothers of typically developing children. Employing a comparative research design, the statistical population comprised all mothers of school-aged students in Rasht, as well as mothers whose children were referred to four specialized learning disability centers in the same city during the 2017–2018 academic year. A total of 166 participants were selected through convenience sampling, including 83 mothers of children with learning disabilities and 83 mothers of typically developing children. Data collection instruments included Lalley’s Lifestyle Questionnaire and Garnefski’s Cognitive-Emotional Regulation Questionnaire, both of which assess key dimensions of psychosocial functioning. The collected data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to determine group differences. The results revealed statistically significant differences between the two groups in both lifestyle (p = 0.001) and cognitive-emotional regulation (p = 0.05). These findings suggest that the presence of a child with learning disabilities substantially influences maternal lifestyle choices and emotional regulation strategies, highlighting the need for targeted support programs and interventions for this population.
